IIM Admission 2026: From CAT to the Final Offer

21 IIMs, one common entrance test and no common counselling. CAT gets you onto a shortlist; everything after that is each institute's own formula, and that formula weighs a great deal more than your percentile. This is why two candidates on identical CAT scores routinely end up at very different institutes — or one at an IIM and the other nowhere.

Who can apply

A completed bachelor's degree with the minimum aggregate the IIMs specify, relaxed for reserved categories. Final-year students may apply and convert the offer on producing their result. There is no age limit and no restriction on the number of CAT attempts — a real contrast with JEE Advanced.

CAT: what it actually decides

CAT is conducted by the IIMs on rotation, normally on a Sunday in late November, in three sections — verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability. Results are reported as percentiles, sectional and overall.

What CAT decides is whether you get a call. It does not decide admission. Most IIMs apply sectional percentile minimums as well as an overall one, which is why a lopsided score — brilliant quant, weak verbal — can miss a shortlist that a lower but balanced overall percentile clears.

We do not publish "the percentile you need". Every IIM sets its own bar, they differ sharply between institutes and between categories, and they move each year. Each IIM publishes its own criteria on its admissions page before the cycle opens — that is the number to plan against, not a figure copied from a forum.

How the shortlist is really built

This is where most candidates misjudge their chances. A shortlist score typically blends:

CAT percentile — overall and sectional
Class 10 and Class 12 marks — weighted directly at many IIMs, which means school performance you cannot change still counts years later
Graduation performance, sometimes normalised by stream
Academic diversity — non-engineering backgrounds are often given weight, precisely because the applicant pool is engineering-heavy
Gender diversity
Work experience — usually rewarded up to a band, then flat

The practical implication: if your Class 10 and 12 marks are modest, you need a higher percentile than the published minimum to reach the same shortlist. Knowing that early changes how hard you target CAT.

WAT and the personal interview

Shortlisted candidates face a written ability test (or a group exercise at some institutes) and a panel interview. The WAT is usually a short argumentative piece on a current or abstract topic. The interview covers your academic background, your work, your reasons for an MBA and often the subject of your own degree — a mechanical engineer should expect mechanical engineering questions.

The final composite score

The offer is made on a composite that re-weights everything: CAT, past academics, work experience, diversity, WAT and the interview. CAT's weight in this final score is frequently lower than its weight in the shortlist. A candidate who scraped into the shortlist can convert by interviewing well; a high scorer can fail to convert. Treat the interview as the second exam, because it is.

The other door: IPM straight after Class 12

A handful of IIMs run a five-year Integrated Programme in Management, entered directly after Class 12 through IPMAT or JIPMAT rather than CAT. It is a genuine route into the IIM system for a school-leaver, and it is badly under-known among Class 12 students who assume management is a post-graduation decision.

Where the 21 IIMs are

From the 1961 foundations at Ahmedabad and Calcutta through to IIM Mumbai. There is no home-state quota at any of them — admission is All India throughout.

Reservation at the IIMs

The IIMs apply the same central reservation as every other centrally funded institution — Open 40.5%, EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, with PwD 5% horizontally within each. Three things that quietly cost candidates an IIM seat

Optimising only for overall percentile and missing a sectional minimum.
Not reading each IIM's own criteria, and so not knowing that their Class 10 and 12 marks have put the effective bar well above the published one.

What CAT percentile do I need for an IIM?

There is no single answer and anyone who gives you one is guessing. Each IIM publishes its own category-wise minimums, they differ sharply between institutes, and they change each year. Plan against the criteria on the admissions page of the IIMs you actually want.

Do my Class 10 and Class 12 marks matter for IIM admission?

Yes, often directly. Many IIMs put explicit weight on school and graduation performance in both the shortlist and the final composite score. Weak school marks mean you need a higher CAT percentile to reach the same shortlist.

Can I join an IIM right after Class 12?

Yes, through the five-year Integrated Programme in Management offered by several IIMs, entered via IPMAT or JIPMAT instead of CAT. The standard MBA needs a completed bachelor's degree.

Is there a limit on CAT attempts or an age limit?

No. Unlike JEE Advanced, CAT has no cap on attempts and no age limit.

Does a high CAT score guarantee admission?

No. CAT decides the shortlist; the offer comes from a composite score that also weighs past academics, work experience, diversity and your WAT and interview performance. Its weight in the final decision is often lower than in the shortlist.

Is there any state or home-state quota at IIMs?

No. IIM admission is All India, with only the central reservation categories applying.
