NIT Admission 2026: JEE Main, the Home-State Quota and Choice Filling

31 NITs, one exam, and one rule that decides more outcomes than anything else — the home-state quota. Two students with identical JEE Main ranks routinely get very different branches, purely because of which state they passed Class 12 in. If you understand nothing else about NIT admission, understand this.

The route, end to end

JEE Main. That is the whole exam requirement. There is no second paper for an NIT seat — your JEE Main All India Rank is what you are allotted on.
Declare your home state correctly in the application. This is not cosmetic; it decides which half of every NIT's seats you compete for.
JoSAA registration and choice filling — the same combined list that carries the IITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
JoSAA allotment rounds, with float, slide or freeze after each.
CSAB special rounds for whatever is still vacant in the NIT+ system afterwards.

The home-state quota, properly explained

Every NIT splits its seats into roughly two halves:

Quota	Who competes	Practical effect
Home State (HS)	Candidates whose home state is the state the NIT is located in	A far smaller pool for the same seats, so the closing ranks are usually much more generous
Other State (OS)	Everyone from the rest of India	The entire country competing for the other half — the harder side of the wall by a wide margin

The consequence is worth stating bluntly: your own state's NIT is almost always your best NIT. A rank that gets a mid-tier branch at an NIT in another state will often get a considerably better branch at your home NIT. Students who leave their home NIT off the list because "it is too good for my rank" are making an expensive assumption — that judgement is usually formed from other-state closing ranks.

For Tamil Nadu candidates this means NIT Tiruchirappalli is your home-state NIT and should be on the list under home-state quota before you write it off. NIT Puducherry (Karaikal) sits next door but is a Puducherry institute, so a Tamil Nadu candidate is other-state there. Getting that distinction wrong costs real choices.

Which state is your home state?

For NIT seat allotment your home state is normally the state in which you passed Class 12 — not where you were born, not where your parents live, and not where your caste certificate was issued. A student who studied Class 12 in Karnataka but whose family is from Tamil Nadu is generally a Karnataka home-state candidate.

Special rules exist for candidates who passed Class 12 abroad and for some union territories, and the JoSAA business rules for the current session are the authority. Because this field determines half your realistic options, verify it against the current brochure before you submit — it is not something to correct later.

JoSAA rounds, then CSAB

JoSAA runs the main counselling across several rounds. After each allotment you either freeze (accept and stop), float (accept but stay in the running for anything higher) or slide (stay in the same institute but remain open to a better branch there).

When JoSAA closes, CSAB opens special rounds for seats still vacant in the NIT+ system — NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. It is a genuine second chance and a large number of candidates never register for it. Note that IIT seats do not come back through CSAB.

Reservation at the NITs

Central reservation applies exactly as it does at the IITs — Open 40.5%, EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, with PwD 5% horizontally inside each. The difference is that at an NIT these categories operate inside both the home-state and other-state halves, so there is a home-state OBC-NCL pool and an other-state OBC-NCL pool, and they close at quite different ranks.

Four expensive mistakes in NIT counselling

Judging your home NIT by other-state closing ranks and leaving it off the list.
Declaring the wrong home state, usually by entering the family's state instead of the Class 12 state.
Skipping CSAB after an unsatisfying JoSAA result.
Filling too few choices — the same mistake that costs IIT aspirants seats.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need JEE Advanced for an NIT?

No. NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats are allotted on the JEE Main rank alone, through JoSAA. JEE Advanced is only for the IITs.

How does the home state quota work in NITs?

Each NIT reserves roughly half its seats for candidates whose home state is the state the NIT is in, and opens the other half to the rest of India. Because the home-state pool is much smaller, closing ranks under home state are usually far more generous.

Which state counts as my home state for NIT admission?

Normally the state where you passed Class 12 - not your birth state and not where your family lives. Verify it against the current JoSAA business rules before submitting, because it decides half your realistic options.

Is NIT Trichy a home-state NIT for Tamil Nadu students?

Yes. NIT Tiruchirappalli is in Tamil Nadu, so a Tamil Nadu Class 12 candidate competes under its home-state quota. NIT Puducherry is a Puducherry institute, so the same candidate is other-state there.

What is CSAB and should I register?

CSAB runs special rounds after JoSAA finishes, filling seats still vacant in the NIT, IIIT and GFTI system. If you are unallotted or unhappy with your JoSAA seat it is a real second chance, and many candidates miss it simply by not registering. IIT seats do not return in CSAB.

Can I change my branch after the first allotment?

Yes, through float or slide. Float keeps you in the running for any higher choice on your list; slide keeps you at the same institute but open to a better branch there. Freeze ends the process and locks your seat.
