IIT, NIT, IIM & Central Government Institutes — Admission, Locations and the Quota System

By Sampath Kumar · Updated

India's centrally funded institutes run on a completely different set of rules from state counselling. There is no state merit list, the reservation is central rather than your state's, and for the IITs there is no home-state advantage at all. This page sets out how each family admits students, where every campus is, and exactly how the quota arithmetic works.

23IITs
31NITs
21IIMs
31States & UTs covered
What this page does not carry, on purpose. No closing ranks, no per-institute seat counts and no fees. Those are published fresh by JoSAA, CSAB and each IIM every single session and are stale within weeks; quoting last year's numbers as if they were this year's is how students build a wrong choice list. What is here instead is the part that does not move: the process, the campuses, and the reservation rules.

Which exam takes you where

Four different doors, and students routinely confuse them. Everything on the engineering side starts with JEE Main; only the IIT door needs a second exam behind it.

⚙️ IITs

JEE Main → qualify for JEE Advanced → JEE Advanced → JoSAA counselling. The JEE Main rank itself buys you nothing at an IIT beyond the right to sit Advanced.

🏭 NITs, IIITs, GFTIs

JEE Main → JoSAA counselling → CSAB special rounds for whatever is left. No second exam.

💼 IIMs

CAT → shortlist → written test and personal interview → composite score. Or, straight after Class 12, the five-year IPM through IPMAT / JIPMAT.

🏛️ Other central institutes

Their own exams — NEET for AIIMS, IAT for the IISERs, and separate national tests for design, fashion and law.

Want the whole process for one of these, in depth? Each family has its own full guide — this page is the shared reference for the lists, the quota and the state-wise picture.

How IIT admission actually works

The 23 IITs admit to B.Tech, B.S., B.Arch and the dual-degree and integrated programmes purely on the JEE Advanced rank, through JoSAA. There is no state quota, no management quota and no donation seat — the entire intake is All India merit.

  1. Sit JEE Main (Paper 1). Conducted by NTA, normally in two sessions in the first months of the year; your better session score counts.
  2. Make the JEE Advanced cut. Only the top band of JEE Main rankers — of the order of 2.5 lakh candidates, distributed across categories — become eligible to register for JEE Advanced.
  3. Sit JEE Advanced. Conducted by one of the IITs on rotation, usually in May. Two papers, both compulsory, on the same day.
  4. Clear the Class 12 condition. An IIT seat also requires either about 75% aggregate in Class 12 (relaxed to roughly 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your own board. One of the two is enough — many students do not realise the percentile route exists.
  5. Register for JoSAA and fill choices. One combined choice list covering IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Order it by what you actually want, not by what you think you will get; the software protects you from being pushed down your own list.
  6. Ride the rounds. JoSAA runs several rounds. Float, slide or freeze after each allotment, pay the seat acceptance fee and complete document verification within the window — miss it and the seat goes.
  7. Report to the institute. Physical reporting and the final fee close the loop.
The two-attempt rule. JEE Advanced may be attempted only twice, and only in two consecutive years. JEE Main is more forgiving, which lulls students into wasting an Advanced attempt on an unprepared year. Decide in advance which two years are yours.

How NIT, IIIT and GFTI admission works

The 31 NITs, the IIITs and the Government Funded Technical Institutes all admit on the JEE Main rank through the same JoSAA counselling as the IITs — one registration, one choice list, both families in it. What makes the NITs different is the home-state quota.

  1. Sit JEE Main. Your best session score becomes your All India Rank.
  2. Declare your home state correctly. For NIT seat allotment your home state is normally the state in which you passed Class 12 — not your birth state, and not where your family lives.
  3. Fill JoSAA choices. The same combined list. Home-state and other-state options at the same NIT appear as separate choices.
  4. Go through the JoSAA rounds, then CSAB special rounds if seats remain. CSAB covers the NIT+ system only — IIT seats never return to it.
The home-state quota is the single biggest lever in NIT admission. Roughly half of each NIT's seats are set aside for candidates of the state the NIT sits in, and the other half is open to everyone else. The practical effect is that the same rank gets a far better branch at your own state's NIT than at an equally ranked NIT elsewhere. A Tamil Nadu candidate should always check NIT Tiruchirappalli under home state before assuming it is out of reach.

How IIM admission works

The 21 IIMs admit to the two-year MBA / PGP on the strength of CAT plus a great deal else. A percentile alone decides nothing.

  1. Hold a bachelor's degree (final-year students may apply), with the minimum aggregate the IIMs specify, relaxed for reserved categories.
  2. Sit CAT, conducted by the IIMs on rotation, normally on a Sunday in late November.
  3. Get shortlisted. Each IIM sets its own bar and its own formula — the CAT sectional and overall percentiles, but also Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks, and academic and gender diversity.
  4. Written test and personal interview. WAT or a group exercise, followed by the panel interview.
  5. Final composite score. CAT, past academics, work experience, diversity and the interview are weighted together. This is why two candidates with the same percentile get different results.

Straight after Class 12 there is a second door: the five-year Integrated Programme in Management at a handful of IIMs, entered through IPMAT or JIPMAT rather than CAT.

Other central government institutes worth knowing

Beyond the IIT, NIT and IIM systems, the central government funds several institute families that students overlook simply because they do not know the entrance exam.

IIITs

Information technology institutes, several run as public-private partnerships. Admission on JEE Main through JoSAA, alongside the NITs.

GFTIs

Government Funded Technical Institutes — a mixed group of central and centrally-aided colleges that also allot through JoSAA on JEE Main.

AIIMS and central medical institutes

MBBS on the NEET UG rank through MCC's All India Quota counselling, not through JoSAA.

IISc and the IISERs

Research-first science degrees. The IISERs admit mainly through their own aptitude test; IISc runs its own admission for the B.S. programme.

IIST Thiruvananthapuram

Space science and technology, under the Department of Space, admitting on JEE Advanced.

Design, fashion, foreign trade

The NIDs, NIFTs and IIFT each run their own national entrance test on their own calendar.

The quota system, in full

Every centrally funded institute — IIT, NIT, IIIT, GFTI, IIM alike — applies the same Government of India reservation. This is central reservation and it is not the same as your state's list, which is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the whole process.

CategoryShare of seatsWhat it means
Open / General (UR)40.5%Open to everyone on merit, including candidates from every reserved category who make the open cut-off.
EWS10%Economically Weaker Sections among those not covered by SC, ST or OBC-NCL. Needs a valid EWS certificate on the current-year format.
OBC-NCL27%Other Backward Classes, Non-Creamy Layer, on the central OBC list. A state OBC certificate is not enough — the caste must appear on the central list.
SC15%Scheduled Castes.
ST7.5%Scheduled Tribes.

Horizontal reservation, on top of the above

What the percentages mean in real seats

The arithmetic, so you can sanity-check any branch you are considering. A reserved-category candidate who clears the open cut-off is counted against Open, not against their category — which is why the effective number of category seats is usually a little better than the table suggests.

CategoryShareIn a 100-seat branchIn a 600-seat institute
Open / General40.5%40.5 seats243 seats
OBC-NCL27%27 seats162 seats
SC15%15 seats90 seats
EWS10%10 seats60 seats
ST7.5%7.5 seats45 seats
The certificate trap. An OBC certificate issued against your state list is worthless here unless the caste also appears on the central list, and the Non-Creamy Layer certificate has to be on the current year's central format. EWS certificates must likewise be on the prescribed format for the current financial year. Candidates lose their category claim at document verification over this every year — check it months before counselling, not during it.

State-wise analytics: where the institutes actually are

75 IITs, NITs and IIMs across 31 states and union territories. Two things stand out. Every state has at least one NIT — that was the design — while the IITs and IIMs are far more unevenly spread. And a handful of states carry three or four of these institutes at once, which matters to you only through the NIT home-state quota, since IIT and IIM seats are All India.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get into an IIT with JEE Main alone?

No. JEE Main only decides whether you may sit JEE Advanced. Every B.Tech seat in the 23 IITs is allotted on the JEE Advanced rank. JEE Main on its own gets you the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

How many times can I attempt JEE Advanced?

Twice, in two consecutive years. JEE Main allows more attempts than that, so candidates often have JEE Main attempts left after their JEE Advanced eligibility has run out. Plan the two Advanced attempts deliberately rather than spending one casually.

What is the home state quota in NITs, and do IITs have one?

NITs split their seats roughly half for Home State candidates and half for Other State candidates. Your home state is normally the state where you passed Class 12, not where you were born or where your family lives. IITs have no home state quota at all — every IIT seat is All India, so a Tamil Nadu student competes on identical terms for IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur.

Is a state OBC certificate valid for IIT and NIT admission?

Only if the caste also appears on the central OBC list, and the Non-Creamy Layer certificate must be on the current-year central format. A large number of candidates lose their category claim at document verification on exactly this point. Check the central list before counselling opens.

What are the female supernumerary seats in IITs?

IITs create extra seats for women over and above the normal intake, so that filling them does not reduce the seats available in the general pool. They are allotted in the same JoSAA rounds, and reservation applies within them the same way.

Can I join an IIM straight after Class 12?

Yes, through the five-year Integrated Programme in Management offered by a handful of IIMs, entered via IPMAT or JIPMAT rather than CAT. The standard MBA route needs a completed bachelor's degree and a CAT score.

Does a high CAT percentile guarantee an IIM seat?

No. CAT gets you shortlisted; the final call is a composite score that also weighs your Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks, work experience, academic and gender diversity, and your performance in the written test and personal interview. Two candidates on the same percentile routinely get different outcomes.

What is the difference between JoSAA and CSAB?

JoSAA runs the main joint counselling for all IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs together. CSAB runs the special rounds afterwards, for the seats left vacant in the NIT+ system only — IIT seats do not come back in CSAB.

Where to verify all of this

Reservation percentages are Government of India norms applied by all centrally funded institutions. Process and eligibility follow the published rules of the conducting bodies — NTA for JEE Main, the organising IIT for JEE Advanced, JoSAA and CSAB for engineering seat allotment, and the IIMs for CAT. Institute lists are the campuses operating as of 2026-09-09. Because every one of these bodies republishes its brochure each session, confirm the current year's dates, cut-offs and certificate formats on the official portal — jeemain.nta.nic.in, jeeadv.ac.in, josaa.nic.in, csab.nic.in and iimcat.ac.in — before you act on anything here. College Path does not publish closing ranks for these institutes; JoSAA's own round-wise opening and closing rank file is the only authoritative source.
