How many counselling routes are there for MBBS in Tamil Nadu?

Two. Tamil Nadu state counselling under The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University fills 85% of government college seats plus 100% of the state's self-financing (private) colleges and private medical universities. The All India Quota (AIQ) run by MCC fills the remaining 15% of state government college seats plus 100% of central institutions (AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC) and all-India deemed universities.

What documents are required for NEET UG counselling?

Typically: NEET admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates, photo ID (Aadhaar), passport photos, community/category certificate if applicable, and nativity certificate for state quota. Always check the official notification for the exact list.

When does NEET UG 2026 counselling start?

It is already in progress. Round 1 ran 5-15 August 2026 (result 21 August). MCC published the final All India Quota Round 2 result on 12 September 2026; reporting runs to 18 September and MCC verifies joined candidates on 19 September. Under the schedule MCC re-issued on 14 September 2026, Round 3 registration and payment run 22-27 September (registration to 3 PM, payment to 6 PM), choice filling 23-28 September to 12 noon, allotment processing 28-29 September, the Round 3 result on 30 September and reporting 1-9 October; the online stray round runs 12-15 October with its result on 17 October and reporting 19-26 October. Tamil Nadu state Round 2 ran 7-13 September with the result on 15 September and joining extended to 19 September; the MCC frame puts state Round 3 at 28 September to 9 October (joining by 14 October) and the state stray round at 17-21 October (joining by 26 October). The UG academic session commenced on 15 September 2026.

Is the Tamil Nadu MBBS rank list 2026-27 out?

Yes. The Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Chennai published the Provisional Rank List for MBBS/BDS 2026-27 on 10 August 2026. There are three separate lists: Government Quota with 35,926 candidates (marks 705 down to 177), the Tamil Nadu Government School 7.5% reservation list with 3,625 candidates, and the Management Quota list with 26,956 candidates. Government quota seats in self-financing colleges are filled from the same Government Quota list, and one list covers both MBBS and BDS.

Report to the allotted college by 18 September 2026. The two counselling routes

MBBS/BDS seats in Tamil Nadu are filled through two separate counselling systems, based on NEET rank, category and quota. Which one fills a seat depends on the type of college:

NEET UG 2026 counselling schedule (official)

MCC released the official NEET UG 2026 counselling schedule on 1 August 2026, covering four rounds — Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and an online stray-vacancy round — for both the All India Quota and state counselling. Because NEET UG 2026 was re-conducted on 21 June 2026 and results came in July, the whole calendar is compressed: MCC has directed institutions to treat Saturdays, Sundays and gazetted holidays as working days. Tamil Nadu’s state rounds run a few days behind each AIQ round, and TN published its MBBS/BDS rank list on 10 August 2026.

All AIQ dates are from MCC’s own schedules: Round 1 revised 19 August 2026, and Rounds 2, 3 and stray re-issued on 14 September 2026 (these replace the 1 August dates). Tamil Nadu’s Round 2 column is from the Selection Committee’s Round-II schedule of 6 September; its Round 3 and stray entries are the national frame MCC set for every state on 14 September — the Committee will notify the exact days. Tamil Nadu MBBS/BDS rank list 2026-27

The Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education & Research, Chennai published the Provisional Rank List for MBBS/BDS 2026-27 on 10 August 2026, immediately after the eligibility grievance window closed on 7 August. It comes as three separate merit lists — the same NEET score gives you a different rank in each:

Government-quota seats in self-financing colleges come from the Government Quota list — there is no separate list for them.
The Government Quota and 7.5% lists carry a community rank (BC, BCM, MBC&DNC, SC, SCA, ST) alongside the general rank. OC candidates have no community rank — they are ranked on the general merit list only.
The Management Quota list has no community column at all; it is a single general list.
One list covers both MBBS and BDS.
Where several candidates share the same NEET mark, their order inside that block is set by the tie-break rules in the prospectus.

Step-by-step counselling process

Registration — register separately on the MCC portal (AIQ) and the TN selection committee portal (state quota) after the NEET result.
Fee payment — pay the registration and refundable security fee for each route you join.
Choice filling & locking — add colleges and courses in your true order of preference, then lock your choices before the deadline.
Seat allotment — the system allots seats round-wise by merit (NEET rank), category, quota and your choice order.
Result & reporting — if allotted, download the allotment letter, pay fees and report to the college with original documents.
Upgradation rounds — choose "upgrade" in later rounds if you want a better seat while holding your current one (rules vary by round).

Rounds explained

Both AIQ and state counselling run in multiple rounds — typically Round 1, Round 2, a mop-up/Round 3 and a stray-vacancy round. Cutoffs (closing ranks) generally rise in later rounds as seats fill, so a college out of reach in Round 1 may open up in Round 2 or 3. Plan your choice filling round by round rather than treating Round 1 as your only chance.

Choice-filling strategy

Fill in true preference order — the system always tries your higher choices first; never place a less-preferred college above a more-preferred one.
Mix ambition, realistic and safe choices — a few dream colleges, a solid band around your rank, and safe options so you don't go unallotted.
Use last year's cutoffs — base your list on real data like the AIQ 2025 closing ranks and the state-quota trends in the finder.
Don't leave choices empty in later rounds if you still want a seat.
