IIT Admission 2026: What It Actually Takes to Get a Seat

There are 23 IITs and every single B.Tech seat in them is allotted on one number — your JEE Advanced rank. No state quota, no management seat, no donation, no second list. That makes the route unusually simple to describe and unusually unforgiving to get wrong. Here is the whole path, and the four places students most often lose the seat.

The route, end to end

JEE Main. Conducted by NTA, normally across two sessions early in the year. Your better session counts. For an IIT aspirant this exam has exactly one job: getting you into the qualifying band for JEE Advanced.
Qualify for JEE Advanced. Only the top slice of JEE Main rankers — of the order of 2.5 lakh candidates, distributed across categories — may register for Advanced.
JEE Advanced. Set by one of the IITs on rotation, usually in May. Two papers, both compulsory, both on the same day.
Meet the Class 12 condition. Either roughly 75% aggregate (about 65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your own board. Either one is enough.
JoSAA registration and choice filling. One list covering IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs together.
The allotment rounds. Float, slide or freeze after each round, pay the seat acceptance fee, clear document verification, then report to the institute.

JEE Advanced eligibility, in plain terms

Four conditions have to hold at once, and candidates routinely satisfy three and miss the fourth.

Condition	What it means
JEE Main performance	You must be inside the qualifying band of JEE Main for your category. This is a rank cut, not a marks cut, and it moves every year.
Number of attempts	JEE Advanced may be taken twice, in two consecutive years — and only those two. This is the single hardest constraint in the process.
Class 12 year	You must have appeared for Class 12 (or equivalent) within the window the brochure specifies for that session.
Prior IIT admission	A candidate who has already accepted and retained an IIT seat in an earlier year is generally barred, even with attempts remaining.

The two-attempt rule is the one to plan around. JEE Main is far more forgiving on attempts, which lulls students into treating their first Advanced as a trial run. It is not a trial run — it is half of everything you get. Decide deliberately which two consecutive years are yours, and treat a genuinely unprepared year as a year to skip Advanced rather than spend it.

The Class 12 condition — and the escape route nobody uses

An IIT seat needs the Board result to clear a bar as well as the rank. There are two ways over it and only one of them is widely known:

The aggregate route — roughly 75% overall in Class 12 (about 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates).
The percentile route — a place in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in your own board, in your own stream. A student who missed 75% by a few marks in a board that scored low overall can still clear this comfortably.

You need either, not both. Every year students who cleared JEE Advanced walk away believing their board marks disqualified them, without ever checking their board's percentile cut.

JoSAA choice filling, and why order matters more than length

JoSAA allots on one principle: it gives you the best choice on your list that your rank can reach, and it never gives you something lower while something higher is still reachable. Two consequences follow, and both are counter-intuitive:

Ordering by preference cannot hurt you. Putting a dream branch at number one does not cost you the realistic option at number thirty. Order the list by what you genuinely want.
A short list is the real risk. Filling only eight choices because you assume the rest are out of reach is how candidates end up unallotted while seats they would have accepted go to someone else in a later round.

Reservation at the IITs

IITs apply central Government of India reservation: Open 40.5%, EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, with PwD 5% applied horizontally inside each of those. On top of that the IITs create female supernumerary seats — additional seats for women over and above the sanctioned intake, so filling them does not shrink the general pool.

There is no home-state quota at an IIT. This is the biggest structural difference from NIT admission, and from every state counselling you have dealt with. A student from Tamil Nadu competes on exactly the same terms for IIT Madras as for IIT Kanpur — being local to Chennai carries no weight whatsoever. Choose the IIT on the branch and the campus, never on geography.

The category rules themselves are central, not your state's. An OBC certificate issued against the Tamil Nadu list is not usable here unless the caste also appears on the central OBC list, and the Non-Creamy-Layer certificate must be on the current year's central format. Where the 23 IITs are

Spread across 20 states and union territories, from the 1951 foundation at Kharagpur to the 2016 cohort. Since there is no home-state advantage, the map matters to you only for cost of living, climate and how far from home you are willing to be.

Four ways students lose an IIT seat they had earned

Spending an Advanced attempt casually. Two, consecutive, and that is it.
Assuming the board aggregate disqualifies them without checking the top-20-percentile route.
Filling a short choice list out of pessimism, then going unallotted.
Turning up to document verification with a state-list category certificate, or an expired Non-Creamy-Layer certificate, and losing the category claim on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an IIT seat with only a JEE Main rank?

No. JEE Main decides whether you may sit JEE Advanced, and nothing more. Every IIT B.Tech seat is allotted on the JEE Advanced rank. A strong JEE Main rank on its own points you at the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

How many attempts do I get at JEE Advanced?

Two, and they must be in two consecutive years. This is far stricter than JEE Main, so plan which two years you will use rather than spending one on an unprepared attempt.

I got less than 75% in Class 12. Am I out?

Not necessarily. The Class 12 requirement is satisfied either by roughly 75% aggregate (about 65% for SC, ST and PwD) OR by placing in the top 20 percentile of your own board. Many students who miss the aggregate clear the percentile route without realising it exists.

Does being from Tamil Nadu help me at IIT Madras?

No. IITs have no home-state quota at all. Every seat is All India, so your domicile makes no difference at any IIT. That is the opposite of the NITs, where roughly half the seats are reserved for candidates of that institute's own state.

Will my Tamil Nadu OBC certificate work at an IIT?

Only if your caste also appears on the central OBC list, and only with a Non-Creamy-Layer certificate on the current year's central format. A state-list certificate alone is rejected at document verification. Check this months before counselling opens.

Does JoSAA penalise me for putting an ambitious choice first?

No. JoSAA gives you the highest choice on your list that your rank can reach, so an unreachable choice at the top costs you nothing. The real mistake is a list that is too short.
