NIT Cutoff Analysis 2026: What the Home-State Quota Is Really Worth

Everyone tells you the home-state quota helps. Nobody tells you by how much. Computed from JoSAA's own 2026 result across all 31 NITs, here is the size of that advantage — and how sharply it varies by category.

Where each category actually reaches

Round 5, gender-neutral seats. Each row is that category’s own rank scale, so read down a row, never across one. “Best” is the single hardest seat in the whole NIT system for that category; “median” is the midpoint of every branch.

The home-state quota, measured

Same institute, same branch, same category, same gender pool — the only thing changing is Home State versus Other State. That makes this a clean, same-scale comparison, and across 1,611 matched pairs the home-state closing rank is a median 1.54× looser. A student applying to their own state’s NIT can be roughly 54% further down the list and still get the same seat.

The advantage is not uniform. It is largest in ST (2.13×) and smallest in OPEN (1.38×) — so the reserved categories gain more from staying in state than open-category candidates do.

Female-only seats, measured

The NITs create supernumerary seats for women on top of the sanctioned intake. Same branch, same category, same round — another clean same-scale comparison. Across 2,420 matched pairs the female-only closing rank is a median 1.42× looser than the gender-neutral one.

How much Round 1 to Round 5 actually moves

Across 6,372 branch-category-quota combinations that appear in both rounds, the NIT closing rank loosens by a median of 9.8% between Round 1 and Round 5.

That is a real shift. Seats genuinely open up here in the later rounds, which is why withdrawing early or skipping the remaining rounds costs NIT candidates more than it costs IIT candidates.

Round by round, so you can see where in the schedule the movement actually happens rather than assuming it is spread evenly:

Nearly all of it lands in one place: Round 1 to Round 2 (+4.8%). After that the median closing rank barely shifts at all. So the round boundary worth staying in for is that one — the later rounds are mostly about seats being confirmed, not about the bar dropping.

The single most-asked branch, Other State quota, gender-neutral, Round 5 closing rank. Each column is its own rank scale — compare down a column, not across a row.

A dash means no seat was allotted in that combination in Round 5 — usually a very small quota that filled earlier, not an absent branch.

Medians are taken over matched pairs, so a comparison only counts where both sides of it exist in the same round. Ranks are a record of what happened in 2026 and are not a promise about 2027; JoSAA republishes the file every session. Confirm anything you are about to act on against the official portal.
